Dolores Hoos's blog ::The Vampire Diaries Spoilers – The Character of… | Gather

Everything               suffers               when               a               television               show               tries               to               juggle               too               many               characters.

The               plot               becomes               unbelievable,               characters               inexplicably               disappear               for               episodes               and               fans               commiserate               about               their               once               great               show.

Personally,               I               find               it               tough               to               watch               characters               I've               cared               about               since               Season               One               get               pushed               to               the               wayside               for               less               interesting               new               people.

Now,               with               the               news               of               so               many               new               parts               being               added,               could               CW               favorite               "The               Vampire               Diaries"               fifth               season               be               the               next               show               to               succumb               to               the               curse?
               Limits
It               is               great               to               expand               a               character's               interactions,               but               it               shouldn't               be               at               the               expense               of               other               current               cast               members.

As               of               the               end               of               Season               4,               there               are               at               least               seven               characters               poised               to               come               back               for               Season               Five.

According               to               Zap2It,               there               will               be               five               new               characters               added               to               the               upcoming               season.

At               least               three               will               be               recurring               parts.

That               is               a               lot               of               people               to               keep               track               of.

In               order               to               serve               all               the               plotlines               for               that               many               people,               there               are               going               to               be               less               scenes               allotted               to               the               characters               we've               spent               the               last               four               seasons               with.
As               a               viewer,               I               loved               Klaus               (               Joseph               Morgan               ),               Elijah               (               Daniel               Gillies               )               and               Rebekah               (               Claire               Holt               ),               but               I               was               glad               to               hear               they               were               being               moved               over               to               "The               Originals."               It               would               give               the               other               storylines               a               chance               to               be               better               developed               since               the               newly               freed               up               episode               space               could               be               devoted               to               other               fan-favorites.

Does               anyone               remember               the               last               time               Matt               (               Zach               Roerig               )               had               an               actual               storyline               longer               than               two               scenes?

It               seems               all               the               show               is               doing               is               swapping               one               set               of               recurring               characters               for               another.

One               or               two               of               them               fans               could               learn               to               love               over               time,               but               five?

No               one               has               the               time               or               the               patience               to               keep               track               of               that               many               new               people               in               addition               to               the               twisting               plots               and               veteran               characters.
Add               New               Characters:               The               Right               Way
All               shows               add               characters               to               flesh               out               their               stories               each               season.

But               the               chief               complaint               I've               heard               from               fans               in               recent               months               is               that               the               show               became               too               bloated.

TVD               has               such               a               backlog               of               underused               characters               they               could               build               upon               instead               of               introducing               new               faces.
If               they               want               to               add               one               or               two               new               characters               that               would               be               fine.

Caroline               (               Candice               Accola               )               and               Elena               (               Nina               Dobrev               )               are               heading               to               college.

It               is               logical               we               would               meet               a               new               student               or               professor               there,               which               is               exactly               what               the               show               is               planning               to               do.

However,               these               characters               should               not               be               carrying               independent               plotlines.

Instead,               they               should               be               around               to               aid               with               moving               the               primary               characters               forward.

If               the               audience               responds               to               their               presence,               then               promote               them.

Before               that               happens?

Unless               they're               essential               and               won't               detract               from               the               main               story,               they               need               to               be               left               on               the               cutting               room               floor.
               A               Return               to               Form
If               TVD,               puts               a               limit               on               cast               additions               and               pays               more               attention               to               their               primary               actors,               everyone               benefits.

The               actors               will               get               to               play               more               detailed               character               arcs               where               they'll               really               get               to               shine.

Plus,               the               stories               will               be               tighter.

When               there               are               so               many               different               characters               to               keep               track               of               it               is               tough               to               keep               all               those               loose               threads               straight               and               have               them               all               converge               into               the               season's               main               story               arc.

Trying               to               shoehorn               certain               plots               into               the               main               narrative               is               not               only               painful               for               the               viewers               but               discredits               the               plot.
The               early               seasons               were               known               for               nearly               seamless               storylines               that               flowed               from               one               twist               to               the               next.

If               there's               not               enough               focus,               as               seen               in               Season               Four,               the               entire               show               suffers               under               the               weight.

Finally,               let's               not               forget               that               when               actors               feel               underused               they               tend               to               leave.

Do               we               really               want               to               risk               any               of               our               long-time               favorites               leaving               for               good               because               the               show               runners               were               worried               about               a               character               that               could               be               long               gone               by               season's               end?
TVD               Fans,               what               do               you               think?

Are               this               many               new               characters               good               or               bad?

Will               the               show               suffer               for               it?

Talk               about               it               below!
