Dolores Hoos's blog ::Thoughts on the show, The Vampire Diaries










               On               the               riveting               season               finale               of               "The               Vampire               Diaries,"               glimpses               of               the               past               come               to               the               forefront               and               characters               and               relationships               are               shaken               up.

History               appears               doomed               to               repeat               itself               and               Elena               (Nina               Dobrev)               gets               a               hefty               dose               of               déjà               vu.
               The               laundry               list               of               unresolved               events               includes               a               potential               love               triangle               between               Caroline               (Candice               Accola),               Tyler               (Michael               Trevino)               and               Klaus               (Joseph               Morgan)               to               rival               Elena,               Stefan               (Paul               Wesley)               and               Damon               (Ian               Somerhalder).

Fans               have               tirelessly               insisted               the               Klaus-Caroline               connection               would               not               have               been               introduced               only               to               end               without               being               explored.

Sure               enough,               Caroline's               emotional               reaction               to               her               belief               that               Klaus               is               gone               reveals               her               feigned               indifference               was               an               act.



               Daunting               Decisions
               Also,               Bonnie               (Kat               Graham)               and               Jeremy               (Steven               R.

McQueen)               are               finally               making               autonomous               decisions               outside               of               the               edicts               forced               on               them               by               others.

Bonnie               chooses               to               help               Klaus               leave               his               body               to               spare               him               and               her               loved               ones               and               Jeremy               conspires               with               Matt               (Zach               Roerig)               to               forcibly               take               Elena               out               of               town               in               order               to               help               save               her-or               so               he               thinks.
               Elena               ultimately               comes               to               terms               with               her               feelings               and               learns               that               loving               someone               doesn't               always               mean               holding               on               to               them.

Just               as               she               had               to               let               go               of               Matt               at               the               beginning               of               Season               1,               she               now               must               painfully               give               up               Damon               in               order               to               remain               true               to               the               man               she               believes               she               met               first--Stefan.
               Survival
               Stefan               and               Damon's               fateful               appearance               in               Mystic               Falls               occurred               just               as               Elena               was               going               through               the               greatest               tragedy               in               her               existence.

The               loss               of               her               parents,               her               aunt               Jenna               and               her               history               teacher-turned-guardian,               Alaric,               leads               her               down               a               dark               path,               which               she               somehow               emerges               from               with               less               emotional               scarring               than               one               would               expect.
               Stefan               sealed               his               love               with               Elena               by               helping               her               through               the               darkest               period               of               her               life.

Damon               was               relegated               to               being               a               friend               and               later               a               temptation               for               Elena               but               she               hardly               allowed               herself               to               explore               the               possibilities.

As               Season               3               ends,               everything               the               viewers               have               come               to               know               hangs               in               the               balance               along               with               Elena's               fragile               mortality.
               Will               she               survive               yet               another               car               crash               with               her               humanity               intact               or               will               she               be               a               vampire?

If               it's               the               latter,               will               she               remember               meeting               Damon               before               Stefan               and               could               it               force               her               to               reevaluate               the               choices               she's               made               with               an               obstinate               sense               of               honor               and               duty               as               her               guide?
               Revelations
               During               the               flashback               scene               on               the               desolate               road               where               Elena               is               waiting               for               her               parents               to               pick               her               up               and               she               encounters               Damon,               he               tells               her,               "I               want               you               to               get               everything               you're               looking               for.

But               right               now,               I               want               you               to               forget               that               this               happened.

Can't               have               people               knowing               I'm               in               town               yet."               Damon               gives               up               what               he               wants,               by               compelling               Elena               to               forget               him,               and               then               endures               watching               his               brother               live               out               the               epic               love               he               was               perhaps               destined               for.
               Whether               tragic               events               or               something               more               transcendent               is               the               glue               that               binds               the               show's               main               love               trio,               nothing               is               predictable.

The               show's               writers               walk               a               fine               line               between               intrigue               and               overindulgence               and               so               far               have               not               fallen               off               balance.
               Ironically,               author               L.J.

Smith               was               reportedly               fired               from               writing               "The               Vampire               Diaries"               book               series               for               daring               to               explore               a               Damon               and               Elena               storyline,               which               the               TV               series               has               banked               in               on.
