If               you               live               in               Los               Angeles               or               have               driven               the               freeways               here,               you               may               have               heard               the               words               "Sig               Alert",               meaning               a               big               mess               on               the               freeway.

While               drivers               hear               those               words               all               the               time               and               know               what               they               mean,               most               do               not               know               what               Sig               is               or               where               the               term               came               from.

The               Sig               Alert               system               was               put               in               place               way               back               in               1955               by               pioneering               Los               Angeles               radio               broadcaster               Loyd               "Sig"               Sigmon.

With               Los               Angeles'               growing               freeway               system,               along               with               the               growing               network               of               radio               and               television               stations,               Sigmon               worked               with               the               Los               Angeles               Police               Department               to               devise               a               system               to               alert               motorists               of               problems.

The               system               would               alert               drivers,               via               all               means               necessary,               of               any               traffic               incident               causing               a               delay               of               30               minutes               or               more.

The               original               devices,               revolutionary               at               the               time,               were               installed               in               LAPD               patrol               cars,               along               with               receiver               units               at               radio               and               TV               stations.

Any               traffic               emergency               could               immediately               be               broadcast               to               the               media,               and               then               to               the               public.

The               police               chief,               thinking               the               system               would               never               work,               named               it               "SigAlert"               after               Loyd               and               the               name               stuck.

The               system               proved               very               successful               and               was               even               used               to               warn               citizens               of               an               impending               dam               collapse               in               1963.

The               system               was               taken               over               by               the               California               Highway               Patrol               and               the               CHP               continues               to               operate               it               today.

Drivers               like               me               in               Los               Angeles               know               a               Sig               Alert               means               big               delays               and               to               avoid               the               area.

But               most               people               don't               know               there               once               was               a               Sig               Sigmon               who               invented               the               system               that               still               saves               us               time               almost               60               years               later.

The               system               is               now               online,               at               sigalert.com,               offering               live               traffic               maps               and               alerts.

The               sigalert.com               site               is               owned               by               radio               conglomerate               Westwood               One.
