Dolores Hoos's blog ::Spotlight on DIARY OF A VAMPIRE STRIPPER
Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre? Well as I'm sure mostly everyone knows by now, I was born and raised in Central New Jersey. I still live there with my husband and family. I am an avid reader of romance novels. I'm especially a huge fan of paranormal romance fiction as well as a fan of vampires in general and films containing the paranormal element. So I guess that's what inspired me to write in this genre...it is pretty much came naturally. What is it about the paranormal, in particular vampires, that fascinates you so much? I think it's their dark mystique in general. Their brooding, tormented and mysterious persona. A sexy but charming alpha male vampire does it for me every time...even if he is a little dangerous...it adds to the excitement. What inspired you to write this book? When I sat down at my desk to start writing my first novel, the idea just came to me one day to write a sexy romance novel and the paranormal element combined with the rock'n'roll theme just meshed perfectly. Please tell us about your latest release. LOVE BLEEDS is a sexy paranormal romance set in Europe which features handsome leather-clad rock star vampires for fall for a pair of beautiful, strong-willed heroines; with plenty of emotionally charged twists and turns in the plot. It is the first installment in the Only After Dark series and will be followed up with several more novels; each centered on another character(s) from the cast. Each sexy vamp (and mortal) will have the chance to have their story told and be featured in consecutive installments. Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions? That depends. Sometimes it a little bit of both. I really don't have a 'formula', per se. I usually get a visual image of a character in my head first and the perfect name usually follows. There are other times I might hear a specific name that strikes me as unique and I'll try to create a character I could use in the story around that name. In either case, I try to match the name with attributes of the character. Naming characters is one of my favorite parts of writing a novel! Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another? No, not really. I pretty much had their physical characteristics and personas figured out before I started writing. The others (sub-characters) just took shape as I went on. Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others? They were all pretty fun to write about. Each one of them has such a unique personality that it would be hard for me to choose. Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write? I don't have a formula or make lists. They just develop as I delve more into the story. What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course? I actually have a few...lol. But if I must choose one for this interview I guess I would choose the scene in Chapter Four between Joe and Kat once they are reunited after a brief separation. I'm a hopeless romantic and can't resist a steamy love scene. Joe's mastery at the art of seduction is obvious and totally irresistible; Kat tries hers best to appear unaffected by his blatant sexual taunting and even attempts to turn the tables to make Joe beg for it but she is no match for him. Their chemistry is perfect as is the insatiable passion between them...it's just a totally hot scene! Did you find anything really interesting while researching this or another book? I did actually. It was quite interesting to read all the different viewpoints and conflicting beliefs about vampires in general. Everyone seems to have an opinion or heartfelt belief as to their origin, their sexuality, their feeding habits...you name it and someone has an opinion or factoid they claim is the 'truth' about vampires. Can you tell readers a little bit about the world building in the book/series? How does this world differ from our normal world? It doesn't differ that much actually. LOVE BLEEDS is set in modern day times with a lot of average, everyday people. It just so happens that several of those people happen to be vampires. I wanted the 'world' I created in the book to be a believable reality; a possible scenario in today's world. The 'believability' was an important factor to me. I wanted the reader to feel that what happened to or between the characters could definitely happen to anyone, anywhere, at any given time or place in modern day society. With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones? Most of the characters from Book One will make an appearance in Book Two. The second installment will be centered on Phillip and Nina this time around and I can say for certain that Joe, Kat, Julian, Anya, Max and the remaining band members will be lurking around and interacting with the lead characters. But that's also subject to change. I will also be bringing in a few surprises to stir things up a bit for Phillip and Nina--but sorry, no hints just yet. Do any of your characters have similar characteristics of yourself in them and what are they? Kat is a bit uptight and stubborn. But Nina and I have of few things in common. She is a hopeless romantic--that's definitely me. She is a bit naÆ'¯ve and trusting--me again. She has an adventurous side and is a passionate woman--I don't know about adventurous but I'm definitely a passionate person. I believe in love at first site, soul mates, etc... So Nina and I are definitely somewhat alike. Do you ever suffer from writer's block? How do you deal with it? Sometimes but usually just a few hours away from my desk and the computer screen staring back at me is a good enough cure. If my muse is just being stubborn and unwilling, it might take a full day of getting out of the house or not even turning on my laptop aside from checking emails to get things jump-started again. But it doesn't happen very often so I guess I'm lucky in that way. I always seem to have creative new ideas churning in my brain. Do you have any weird writing quirks or rituals? Nothing unusual. I just like to lock myself in my room, at my desk, with a cup of coffee and have music playing in the background. Do you write in different genres? In different "Romance" genre's? Yes. I also write contemporary romance. I am actually working on my first novel in a series called "Rockin' Love" as we speak. It will be released shortly (hopefully) and then the second installment in the "Only After Dark" series is scheduled to be release after that. At least that's what I'm shooting for! Do you find it difficult to write in multiple genres? No. I enjoy reading both and so far I truly enjoy and have tons of ideas for writing both. When did you consider yourself a writer? Once I started the self-publishing process, I felt like an aspiring writer but it didn't really sink in until I sold my first eBook...that was awesome! But it still felt like something was missing. Then when my ARC of Love Bleeds came in the mail and I was able to hold it in my hands--THAT was the moment it really hit me! What are your guilty pleasures in life? Curling up with a good book, going to rock concerts, clothes/shoes shopping and CHOCOLATE!!! Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life? I love anything to do with fairies, I love to cook and bake (esp. bake), I love to curl up and watch movies with my Hubby or go for a drive together, in my spare time (ha ha) I make custom sterling silver jewelry and silk flower arrangements and I love to spend time with my family. My passions in life are my amazing husband, writing romance, rock music and doing nice things for other people (it makes me smile). What was the last amazing book you read? That I actually had the time to finish...lol?? The Heroin Diaries by Nikki Sixx. He's awesome and the book is raw and real--great read; very emotional. Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot? Either curled up in bed with a warm fuzzy blanket or on the chaise in the cozy corner of my bedroom. What can readers expect next from you? A lot more book releases in the near future, I hope!! As I mentioned in a previous question answer, I hope to release the first installment in the Rockin' Love series soon, hopefully within the next month or so. After that, I plan to release Book Two in the Only After Dark series as a follow-up to Love Bleeds. From that point on? I guess I'll just take things as they come. All I know is that I plan on doing a lot more writing. Where can readers find you on the web? Twitter (http://twitter.com/#!/slangdangel ) Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000892538319 -OR- http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000892538319#!/pages/Love-Bleeds/264784789970 ) My Blog (http://www.maggiejames-author.blogspot.com/ ) Goodreads (http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/4814316.Maggie_James ) Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book? My pleasure! It had been months since so many people had waited in line to see Joe and his band "Slang" perform. When he pulled his sleek black Mercedes up to the curb, he glanced through the tinted windows and saw what looked like hundreds of people lining the sidewalk, anxiously awaiting his arrival. "Damn." He uttered in amazement and shifted the car into park. Not that he minded in the least, quite the contrary. Joe had always prided himself on being the center of attention, but as of late, he was content with simply being able to draw any crowd at all. A turn out such as this was, to say the least, unexpected. He opened the driver's side door and before he had both feet on the ground a female voice cried out, "That must be him!" Followed by what sounded like dozens of women clamoring in excitement as they rushed on the club's entrance. He made his way around the front of the car and headed straight for the front door but his path was suddenly blocked by a busty blonde who had broken free from the crowd. Draped head to toe in black leather; she pressed her ample breasts up against his torso. "You can suck my blood anytime handsome." Her plump red lips dripped with eagerness. "And just what makes you think I'd want to do that?" Joe's deep voice lilted with laughter. "Well...you are one of them aren't you?" The blonde traced her index finger along the strong line of his jaw. "One of whom...?" Joe played along. "Oh stop teasing me." She reached up and caught a strand of his golden hair between her fingers. "I know what you are and it sort of turns me on." "Is that so?" He practically groaned; his dark eyes paid particularly close attention to the fluttering vein in her neck just below her ear. "Um hmm..." She nodded and bit her bottom lip. "I'm not afraid of you." Joe neared her face. He breathed in and immediately recognized her feminine scent as it blended perfectly with her sweet perfume. More importantly, he recognized another tantalizing scent--the scent of fresh blood. Immediately aroused by her proposition, he felt the mounting pressure of not only his fangs as they threatened to appear, but of parts low in his body. Since Joe viewed mortal women as weak and vulnerable, their sole existence to serve him in more ways than one, he was barely able to control the urge to sink his teeth deep into her eager flesh. "You should be." He warned as he took her by the wrist and replaced her arm down at her side. She swallowed hard and remained motionless as she watched him walk away. His ankle length black leather coat waved behind his long muscular legs as though he were moving in slow motion. Other women called out to him but Joe ignored their advances, laughing to himself as he entered the club. "They've been lining up for hours." The male voice was a familiar one. "What the hell did ya' do Boss...take out a personal ad?" Seated on a barstool just inside the doorway was Lucas, head of club security. With his muscular tattooed arms crossed over his broad chest, he looked more of a menace than an ally. "Not that I'm aware of." Joe smirked. "I thought you had the night off?" "I did." Lucas replied with a hint of aggravation. "But Max called me in when this shit started", he motioned with his chin to the assembled crowd. "He thought we might need extra security tonight." "So I see. And where is ole' Max tonight?" "In your office...waiting." Lucas smiled. "For what...?" "You..." "Has Phillip arrived yet?" "Haven't seen him, but Julian is." "What else is new?" Joe's rolled his eyes and took a step inside. "Hey Boss..." Lucas caught him by the shoulder. "What about that smokin' blonde with the double D's?" Joe knew exactly to whom he referred. He pondered for a moment. "Keep an eye on that one for me will ya? She might just come in handy later." "A bit of late night entertainment?" Lucas grinned wickedly. "Or midnight snack..." |
